Male R&B singers from the ’90s were so typical. The elements in the music were great. Powerful voices and solid instrumental arrangements. You could really feel even the most ridiculous songs. I was looking at old videos last week and a friend introduced me to “Splackavelli.” I was embarrassed for everyone involved including myself. But it is indeed a cool ’90s video from The Player’s Club Soundtrack. I was in the 5th grade when this song came out. Geez!
I’ll admit. I hate jumping on the band wagon for any fad in popular culture. It’s my own stubborn way of proving I’m an individual and I can go against the grain instead of following a crowd. My history of using this technique is great for peer pressure but its not a good look when it comes enjoying a talented artist. This is in fact a case of The Carter III. I’ll admit : I was sleeping on Lil’ Wayne’s skills. I’ve followed his career since the late ’90s with Cash Money Millionaires but I never took the time to listen to what he had to say on his own projects in the last 4 years. Dare I say, “what a big mistake?”
With less than 95 days until Election Day, there are still thousands of Americans who haven’t registered to vote and confused if their vote really matters. Please make it your business to encourage friends, co-workers, family, and even strangers that they have to vote in November for the candidate they believe in no matter if they think they won’t make a difference when it will. Do not be discouraged. We’ve come to far to turn away now.
Written and directed by Ralph Wilcox, The Lena Baker Story looks like an amazing story of choices and consequences. A chronicle of the life of Lena Baker (Tichina Arnold), the first woman to be sent to the electric chair in Georgia for the murder of her employer, who forced her into sexual slavery.
I absolutely love the Solange’s swagger this summer. She is someone who is fighting for her dream despite the odds and her message is being reached. With the release of her album, SolAnglel & The Hadley Street Dreams, she has been on a mission to get her music heard. With this mixtape track, “Fuck The Industry (Everything I Am),” you can feel the prescence of a woman with an amazing story to tell at a young age. Solange has been scratched off the Beyonce’s sister nameplate from my roll book. The record is the sample of Kanye West’s “Everything I Am” from his Graduation album.
“Making The Band 4! We in the door!” This show has absolutely been one of my favorites over the past 3 years. I love watching the grind of the performers on the show as they fight for their dreams via Diddy. Now Danity Kane, Day 26 and Donnie are back for another shocking season. What I’m looking forward to most about this season is the return of apeshit choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson. When I saw the trailer instant flashbacks of “Boom Kack Kack” came flying through my computer screen. The new season premiers Wednesday, August 13 at 9pm on MTV.
I’m still unsure if Angela Simmons is serious about a music career but it appears that this video is a platform to promote her Pastry Kicks brand. “Center of Attention” gives the people who don’t know Angela a glimpse of how she and sister Vanessa roll in their land of fabulosity. The video and song appears to be something Angela did out of fun. Only time will tell if she wants to be on the charts but I think the video is cute.
With the launch of the new season of “Run’s House” it appears that offspring of the Run DMC front man are taking over the entertainment industry in their own right. His daughter Vanessa has appeared on “Guiding Light.” The oldest son JoJo is apart updated RunDMC rap group Team Blackout. Angela is a feature fashion editor for Hype Hair magazine, partners a fashion line with Vanessa and had her own magazine partnership with Word Up magazine. Now the Simmons’ chick is making music. I’m not sure whether this single was for fun or if she’s trying to breakout and be a music artist. The song itself is pretty mediocre and there’s nothing ear popping about any of it. But we’re obviously fascinated with this fresh clan of the hip-hop generation and our waiting for the family’s next big move.
